Public Works
The Department of Public Works staff consists of the DPW Superintendent, crew leader, equipment operator and (1) Utility II laborer. This department is responsible for the maintenance and improvements to the City Parks, Streets, Sanitary Sewer, Water Transmission System and various Public Works functions. The following is an overview of these Departments.
Parks
The City is proud to have five parks. River Front Park with its 2,300 feet of boardwalk, Scout Tot Lot is designed for children 2 to 6 years of age while the Columbia Street Playground is designed for children 5 to 12 years of age. The Algonac Skate Park is located at the corner of Michigan and Clay Streets and the Lion’s Field Park is located at the intersection of Dixie and Michigan Streets which is also the location of the City pool which boasts the only Universal Access pool house in the area. The City has an Adopt-a-Park program which commits a community group for two years to picking up litter except after all council sanction events. The only group that currently participates in this program is the Algonac Church of Christ at River Front Park.
Streets
Our Department is responsible for 19.62 miles of streets in our Local (13.52 miles) and Major (6.10 miles) Street System. These duties include but are not limited to cold patching, street/traffic sign replacement and snow plowing and salting. Property owners are reminded that they are responsible for keeping their sidewalks clear of snow and ice within 12 hours after a snowfall. Also, please be advised that it is unlawful to deposit any snow, slush or ice onto any roadway.
Sanitary Sewer
The DPW is responsible for approximately 20 miles of sanitary sewer lines ranging in size from 8” to 18” in diameter. We also maintain 9 sanitary pumping stations and approximately 420 manholes.
Water
Our Department performs all maintenance on the water transmission system. This system consists of approximately 20 miles of water main ranging in size from 4” to 16” in diameter. In addition, there are 320 in-line valves and 215 fire hydrants along with 1,850 water taps.
